Short Bio

Xiaoyu Wang is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics of HKUST since June 2023. She has been a post-doctoral fellow, working with Prof. Zhang Tong from Sept. 2022 to May 2023 in the Department of Mathematics of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. She worked with Prof. Mikael Johansson at the Division of Decision and Control Systems, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) from Sept 2020 to Aug 2022. She received a Ph.D. degree in computational mathematics, from University of Chinese Academy of Sciences & Academy of Mathematics and System Science (AMSS), CAS, China, under the supervision of Prof. Ya-xiang Yuan, in 2020; and a B.S. degree in mathematics, School of Mathematics and Statistics, from Wuhan University, China, in 2015.

She is particularly interested in optimization algorithms and their applications in large-scale machine learning. The topics she has been working on include:

  • Stochastic Optimization Algorithms including First-Order, Second-Order (Newton, Quasi-Newton, or Trust-Region) Methods

  • Learning Rate Policies in Stochastic Optimization

  • Applications of Optimization Methods in Machine Learning

  • Bilevel Optimization

  • Minimax Optimization
